MEDICAL HERBALISM AND FERTILITY

Practitioners: Edinburgh: Dee Atkinson Glasgow: Nikki Biddiss

Medical Herbalism is one of the oldest systems of medicine in the world. Herbalists are primarily concerned with establishing and eradicating the cause of ill health through holistic treatment of the individual. Herbalists use whole plant extracts and believe that by using plants in their natural form, many of the side effects associated with modern medicine can be avoided.

Herbal Medicine has long been used in the treatment of fertility issues and can be very effective in helping to regulate hormonal imbalances which can, in turn, lead to conditions such as Endometriosis; Polycystic ovaries, heavy and irregular menstruation; or fibroids. Herbs are used to help with issues of low sperm count or low sperm motility.

Herbs act to support the whole body and a herbalist will work with you to improve your general health as first step to conceiving. Herbs work to nourish and heal the reproductive system, enabling it to work more effectively. Herbal medicines are usually taken in the form of tinctures, tablets or capsules, as well as herbal teas and must be taken on a regular basis to be useful. This is a gentle and non invasive way to approach issues with fertility and you should allow several months before you see noticeable progress.

Herbal practitioners specialise in managing women’s health issues including hormonal problems, polycystic ovaries, menstrual irregularities, menopause and fertility. Read more about Dee • Read more about Nikki

ACUPUNCTURE AND FERTILITY

Practitioners: Edinburgh: Xing-Hui Liang Glasgow: Alan Hunter

Acupuncture is based on the 3,000 year old tradition of Chinese Medicine and uses fine needles inserted into specific points on the body to enhance the flow of ‘qi’ around the body through channels called meridians. Acupuncture is often cited as an effect treatment for issues around fertility and has been shown to be effective in:

  • helping with Endemetriosis, PCOS and Dysmenorrhea
  • helping to trigger ovulation in some women with ovulatory dysfunction
  • helping to regulate the menstrual cycle
  • helping to improve sperm count
  • combating stress which, in turn, may increase the chance of conceiving
  • increasing blood circulation to the uterus and ovaries
  • clinical research suggests that Acupuncture can help to enhance success rates in IVF

NUTRITIONAL THERAPY AND FERTILITY

Practitioners: Edinburgh: Charlotte Heald Glasgow: Angela MacRitchie

Making sure that both you and your partner are well nourished is a very important first step when trying to conceive. Many issues with fertility arise when one or both partners are not getting a well balanced intake of nutrients. Our Nutritional Therapists will take an in depth look at your diet and create a programme specifically tailored to your needs. We will also address any negative eating habits as well as giving advice on supplements and vitamins. A Nutritional Therapist is there to support you through the changes to your diet and the way you approach what you eat so regular reviews are strongly advised. It can take around four months for both egg and sperm to develop and mature so it is advisable to begin your nutritional programme for a few months before attempting to conceive.

FERTILITY COUNSELLING AND HYPNOTHERAPY (WITH NLP)

Fertility issues have an impact on our whole life and affect our emotional well-being. Equally, the way we live our lives, stresses of modern life or our life experiences may contribute to our fertility. Our counsellors and clinical hypnotherapists have seen many people for help with conception and fertility issues. Counselling, couple counselling and hypnotherapy - combined or individually - can powerfully remove emotional and physical blocks to conception. They also help to decrease our stress levels which, in turn, increases fertility.

Therapy can also help you with all the issues that may arise when wanting to have a child: The most common issues are miscarriages, the inability to conceive, termination or still births in the past, fears around the ability to cope as a mother, stress and fears around having IVF or IUI treatments, egg donation or other medical interventions. Like with other challenges in life, finding a positive attitude helps you move through the difficulties around fertility and transform the situation.

In Counselling and/or Hypnotherapy we guide you away from despair, hopelessness and possibly a feeling of failure towards a new sense of control and confidence in yourself. Physical and emotional barriers to conception can be dissolved through the process of counselling or with the help of deep states of relaxation induced by hypnotherapy.

During hypnosis you will also be given new transformative images and positive thoughts which all contribute to increasing your fertility. We focus our sessions around your specific needs, as an individual or as a couple. From a regained sense of confidence, calm and trust you will be able to find your own individual key to conception, to creating a new life.  For example, two sessions of brief, focused hypnotherapy for IVF will help you relax and decrease your stress levels during the procedure. Hypnotherapy helps calm anxiety levels in general and during medical examinations. It encourages you to develop a positive attitude, which is crucial to conception and a successful pregnancy.
