Menopause is said to take place when you have 12 months without a period, with no other explanation. The average age a woman will reach menopause is 51.5 years however this can happen earlier or later in women.

Over the last few years many patients have approached us, looking for alternatives to hormone replacement therapy.
The onset of the menopause can bring with it a lot of unpleasant symptoms, and the ones that often persuade women to take hormone replacement are hot flushes and mood swings.
Natural Alternatives to HRT
A recent study has found that there may be an increased risk of Ovarian cancer for woman who use Hormone Replacement Therapy or HRT. Research by the University of Oxford found that the risk rises by 40% after five years on HRT compared to a woman who has never used it. It also found that the effect was the same for the two main types of HRT – whether it contained oestrogen only, or contained oestrogen combined with progestogen.
So, is there another option when it comes to managing the symptoms of menopause?
I have developed a recipe for a nutritious healthy cake which is an easy and tasty way of ensuring a high intake of plant oestrogens and omega oils essential to hormonal health.
From my clinical practice I find that every woman experiences the menopause differently. Common symptoms include hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings and sleep disturbance which can be seriously debilitating. An individually prescribed herbal medicine and nutritional changes can often significantly help women through this time of life transition.
