Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a type of gentle massage which stimulates the natural drainage of the lymph, which carries waste products away from the tissues back toward the heart. It involves light pressure and rhythmical circular massage to aid the body in collecting and moving the lymphatic fluid, which plays a key role in delivering nutrients, antibodies and other immune constituents to the tissue cells and removing debris such as toxins, cell wastes and dead particles.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) was developed by the Danish physiotherapist Dr Emil Vodder in the 1930's. Unlike the blood circulatory system which has heart, the lymph system has no pump and depends on contractions of the smooth muscle cells in the walls of lymph vessels and physical activity to propel lymph through the vessels to lymph nodes and then beyond the lymph nodes to the lymph ducts which return lymph to the cardiovascular system.

MLD particularly helps people have been sedentary or overweight for a while. MLD has proved particularly effective for oedema (water retention) and the more serious condition lymph-oedema.

MLD also works on the nervous system, lowering blood pressure, reducing stress and improving sleep patterns.

It may also help in the management of conditions such as sinusitis, headaches, migraines, digestive bloating, skin problems and immune disorders. The therapist uses various techniques to stimulate the lymph flow without stimulating blood flow or damaging the skin.

Naturopathy

Naturopathy

What is Naturopathy or Naturopathic Herbal Medicine?

Naturopathy is a whole medicine system which combines various natural therapies to promote healing and enhance and maintain health. Naturopaths aim to treat the underlying cause of illness and disease, whilst also treating the acute symptoms the patient is experiencing. This is a holistic approach with healing undertaken on the mind, body and soul of a person.

There are six core principles that underpin the practice of Naturopathy:

THE HEALING POWER OF NATURE

Trust in the body’s inherent wisdom to heal itself.

IDENTIFY AND TREAT THE CAUSES

Look and investigate beyond the symptoms to address underlying causes.

FIRST DO NO HARM

Use the most natural, least invasive and least toxic therapies.

DOCTOR AS TEACHER

Educate patients in the best steps to achieving and maintaining health.

TREAT THE WHOLE PERSON

View the body as an integrated whole - treating the physical, mental and spiritual aspects as one.

PREVENTION

Focus on overall health, wellness and disease prevention.

General areas which are studied to become a Naturopath include biological sciences, psychology and counselling, nutrition and dietary planning, botany and herbal medicine studies as well as diagnostic techniques. Sessions can include herbal and nutritional medicine, diet and lifestyle modifications, flower essences, homeopathy and iridology. Naturopathy aims to educate the patient on how to best look after their own unique body and to retrain the body to heal itself naturally.

Is Naturopathy for you?

Naturopathy can be used to assist a variety of health complaints, diagnosed medical conditions, improving particular systems in the body (i.e. immune, nervous system, cardiovascular) and preventing future disease and illness. It is also particularly good for assisting those who need a boost with their overall wellness and vitality or those dealing with chronic illness.

Nutritional Therapy

Nutritional Therapy

Nutritional Therapy aims to change an individual's metabolism from an unbalanced state which may be causing minor or distressing symptoms and which may ultimately lead to diagnosable disease to a state of balance, allowing the body to return to optimum health. The process takes the form of a one-on-one consultation between client and therapist.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The first consultation may take up to 1 hour and will usually include taking a detailed history of health problems, medical and family history, plus diet and lifestyle factors. The client may be asked to fill in a questionnaire prior to consultation and to seek medical advice to eliminate underlying disease.

A nutritional assessment is then made, sometimes with the help of a questionnaire and appropriate laboratory tests, and dietary and lifestyle changes will be recommended, often supported by nutritional supplements based on individual needs and circumstances.

Through regular consultations and adjustments to the nutritional program, the aim is to work in a series of stages to nourish and support the body's innate healing processes with the aim of achieving an optimum state of health for the individual.

WHAT IS NUTRITIONAL THERAPY?

Nutritional Therapy is the application of nutrition science in the promotion of health, peak performance and individual care. Nutritional therapy practitioners use a wide range of tools to assess and identify potential nutritional imbalances and understand how these may contribute to an individual's symptoms and health concerns. This approach allows them to work with individuals to address nutritional balance and help support the body towards maintaining health.

Practitioners consider each individual to be unique and recommend personalised nutrition and lifestyle programmes rather than a 'one size fits all' approach. Practitioners never recommend nutritional therapy as a replacement for medical advice and always refer any client with 'red flag' signs or symptoms to their medical professional. They will also frequently work alongside a medical professional and will communicate with other healthcare professionals involved in the client's care to explain any nutritional therapy programme that has been provided.

Naturopathic Nutritional Therapy

WHAT IS NATUROPATHIC NUTRITIONAL THERAPY

Nutritional Therapy is the application of nutrition science in the promotion of optimal health. It identifies nutritional and biochemical imbalances in the body that lead to ill health. Nutrition and lifestyle approaches to healthcare have been shown to support the health of all the major systems of the body. Typical priorities in nutritional therapy consultations include support to achieve optimum energy levels and gastrointestinal health, maintaining a healthy blood sugar balance, supporting emotional and psychological wellbeing, and better understanding tolerance levels to a broad range of food groups.

Nutritional Therapy is recognised as a complementary medicine and is suitable for individuals with chronic conditions, as well as those looking for support to enhance their health and overall wellbeing.

WHY CHOOSE NATUROPATHIC NUTRITIONAL THERAPY

Nutritional Therapy works holistically on all interlinking systems of whole body and is more than about more than just eating the right foods. It works to correct any personal vitamin and mineral deficiencies, ensuring these are digested and absorbed properly to promote optimal health. Nutritional therapy aims to get to the root cause of symptoms (as opposed to putting a sticking-plaster over them) and to support the body to maintain health.

Nutritional Therapy can support with a wide range of health concerns, including:

  • Digestive issues
  • Food sensitivities (allergies and intolerances)
  • Hormonal imbalances (including female specific issues,
  • Stress management (including sleep disorders)
  • Mood fluctuations
  • Lack of energy
  • Immune dysfunction
  • Skin complaints
  • Healthy ageing

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM NATUROPATHIC NUTRITIONAL THERAPY

Registered Nutritional Therapists use a wide range of tools to assess and identify potential nutritional imbalances and understand how these may contribute to your symptoms and health concerns.

Prior to the initial assessment you will be provided with:

  • A questionnaire (including symptoms, family history, supplements and medications);
  • A three day diet diary; and
  • A statement with our terms of engagement

You’ll be asked to complete and return these documents 2 days before your first appointment so that they can be reviewed beforehand. At the initial appointment, you and your Nutritional Therapist will assess how each system of your body is working and discuss appropriate and achievable changes to make. You will then be sent a nutritional plan and supplement recommendations which is personalised to you and your specific needs (rather than a more common 'one size fits all' approach).

Follow up appointments are generally 4 weeks after the initial assessment. You may benefit from multiple follow up appointments depending on your personal circumstances.

Recommended changes can be made gradually or all at once; you set the pace.

TESTING

A full range of biochemical tests can be accessed alongside a nutritional therapy consultation.

These include

  • Thyroid assessment
  • Adrenal stress assessment
  • Female hormone panel
  • Hair mineral analysis
  • Digestive and parasitology testing
  • Food Intolerance indicator
  • These tests may be appropriate in supporting the development of a more targeted and personalised nutrition plan.

Please note that the above tests are only offered alongside a nutritional therapy consultation to ensure accurate interpretation of results. Accessing the most appropriate tests can be discussed after the initial consultation, where a full health history is taken.

Nutritional therapy interventions work alongside other complementary therapies as well as conventional medicine.

Osteopathy

Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. It works with the structure and function of the body, and is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together.

To an osteopath, for your body to work well, its structure must also work well. So osteopaths work to restore your body to a state of balance.

Osteopaths use touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints, to relieve muscle tension, to enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues, and to help your body’s own healing mechanisms. They may also provide advice on posture and exercise to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring.

Phlebotomy Service

Phlebotomy Service

Phlebotomy services are also known as venipuncture when blood is drawn from the vein in order for the samples to be used by a laboratory for a range of tests which may have been requested by your CAM therapist, GP or other healthcare provider. Blood can be collected via venipuncture, finger pricks, or in the case of infants, heel pricks.

Our Phlebotomists offer this service for:

  • If you would like us to recommend various testing for a range of health concerns.
  • If you have a private blood test and require a blood draw for health screening
due to your GP practice being unable to perform blood tests. Should you need to refer a patient to a qualified phlebotomist, get in touch today.
  • Blood tests for Lyme disease and co-infections. Our Napiers Lyme Clinic works closely with Armin Labs in Germany.

If you are nervous about having your blood taken for any reason, we will reassure you and put you at ease before we begin the blood draw.

Blood tests are used to diagnose and detect the following common ailments:

• Thyroid problems
• Lyme disease and co-infections
• Female health and menopausal changes
• Male hormonal health
• Health screenings for athletes and sportspeople
• Nutrient testing
• Food intolerance testing, including gluten and lactose intolerance
• Airborne allergens or inhalants, such as hayfever, asthma, eczema, and skin rashes

This means that you do not need to be receiving treatment from your GP to receive a blood test, especially if you are seeking to manage your own health, wellness, and lifestyle.

We always strongly advise you to have a consultation rather than self-prescribing, because it allows us to find the course of treatment(s) that are right for you after your blood test. If you’ve spotted symptoms you’re concerned about but your GP won’t (or can’t) perform a blood test, book your consultation with one of our phlebotomists today.

It is important that you are very well hydrated before your appointment. Please drink plenty of water one day prior to, and on the morning of your appointment.

Children’s Appointments

Children can be seen from 8 years old and upwards.

Hopi Ear Candling

Hopi Ear Candling

Hopi Ear Candling, also known as Thermo-Auricular Therapy is a treatment that uses hollow wickless candles made from flax, honey, beeswax and soothing herbs.

The candle is inserted a small way into the ear canal, and when lit produces a mild suction effect, gently massaging the ear drum. The treatment can help in the management of sinus congestion and pain, migraines, headaches and excess ear wax.

As the gentle massaging of the ear drum helps to equalise pressure in the inner and outer ear, Hopi Ear Candling can help with pain when flying and with balance problems such as vertigo.

Kinesiology

Blending the traditions of Eastern and Western medicine, Kinesiology uses non-invasive muscle feedback or “muscle testing,” to identify how the body responds to stress or a stimulus. The stresses can be physical, emotional, psychological, spiritual, or chemical in nature. The purpose of the client receiving a “balance” in the session is to change how the client responds to the stress or stimulus.

During a Kinesiology session, the practitioner first uses muscle testing in order to identify the best method to balance your energy. The next step is to balance your energy, using the identified method e.g. trace the acupuncture meridians, or facilitating stress release.
As a consequence of the balance, you can feel a reduction of stress. You may feel empowered, motivated and energised to make any changes required to reach your potential. Kinesiology, or “muscle monitoring” receives biofeedback from the body and the subconscious ensuring a bespoke treatment for each person.
