Water horsetail the ‘marsh rose’ has been examined in laboratory tests to see how it achieves its lightening effect on the complexion. Marsh rose has been shown to inhibit melanin synthesis and tyrosinase expression in the skin with a powerful little completely natural compound called protoapigenone. After just 28 days 22 female volunteers aged between 30 and 55 years old using marsh rose noticed a 30% improvement and after 56 days the lightness of their skin doubled. Liquorice also contains a depigmenting compound called glabridin. Glabridin has been shown to prevent UVB-induced pigmentation and to inhibit tyrosinase expression, superoxide anion production and cyclo-oxygenase activity.
