Natural Approaches to Heartburn and Acid Reflux

Heartburn and acid reflux can be deeply uncomfortable conditions. While over-the-counter medications and lifestyle changes can help manage these ailments, more people are turning to natural remedies for relief. Among these, liquorice root and slippery elm have gained notable attention.

Understanding Heartburn and Acid Reflux

Heartburn, a symptom of acid reflux, is characterised by a burning sensation in the chest, often occurring after eating. Acid reflux, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), involves stomach acid flowing back into the oesophagus, causing heartburn and other symptoms.

Turning to Nature: Liquorice Root and Slippery Elm

The benefits of natural remedies often come with fewer side effects than conventional treatments, making them an attractive alternative or complementary approach.

Liquorice Root

Historically used in both Western and Eastern medicine, liquorice root has been recognised for its potential to soothe digestive discomfort. Its active compound, glycyrrhizin, is thought to increase the mucus coating of the oesophageal lining, helping to protect it from stomach acid.

One form, known as DGL (deglycyrrhizinated liquorice), has had the glycyrrhizin removed to avoid potential side effects like high blood pressure. DGL is typically suggested for digestive conditions, including acid reflux.

Slippery Elm

Slippery elm, native to North America, has been used as a medicinal herb for centuries. When mixed with water, the inner bark of the slippery elm tree creates a slick gel, or mucilage, which coats and soothes the throat and stomach lining, potentially providing relief from heartburn and acid reflux symptoms.

Considerations and Caveats

While liquorice root and slippery elm can offer relief, they're not a cure for heartburn or acid reflux. Always consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new treatment regimen, particularly if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking other medications.

It's also essential to remember that lifestyle changes, such as adjusting diet and eating habits, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding triggers, are crucial in managing heartburn and acid reflux effectively.

Dealing with heartburn and acid reflux can be challenging, but natural remedies like liquorice root and slippery elm may offer relief. As with any health concern, it's vital to approach treatment holistically and under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
