Mushroom Tinctures FAQs

A tincture is a concentrated herbal extract created by steeping mushrooms in a solvent such as alcohol or glycerine. Mushrooms such as Cordyceps, Reishi, Chaga, Turkey Tail and Lion’s Mane are often used in these tinctures. The alcohol or glycerine is used to draw out the beneficial compounds of the mushrooms.

In general, tinctures use alcohol which provides high extraction efficiency of the beneficial compounds contained in the mushrooms. Glycerites use vegetable glycerine making them alcohol-free, this means they are suitable for people avoiding alcohol entirely.

Yes, most mushroom tinctures (e.g., Reishi, Cordyceps) contain alcohol. Alcohol-free options are available via glycerites if preferred or needed.

Yes, you can reduce or remove the alcohol from a tincture. A common technique is to add a little boiling water to a dose to evaporate about 20% of the alcohol. More information on various techniques can be found in our blog post about tincture alcohol removal.
