In 1860, Duncan Napier opened the doors to his Edinburgh herbal dispensary with a mission to make natural healthcare accessible to all. 165 years later, that mission lives on, not just in our remedies, but in the lives they’ve touched.

To mark this incredible milestone, we invited our customers, friends, and herbal family to share their Napiers stories. From cherished skincare rituals to generational remedies passed down through time, these heartfelt messages remind us of the deep roots we've grown together.

We have shared a sample of these for you below.

Thank you for being part of our journey. If you would like to share your story, you can do so here.

Your Napiers Stories

I discovered Napiers 11 years ago and instantly became a fan. I appreciate the natural products, the lack of synthetic fragrance, and the wholesome feeling I get when using the products. The website is very helpful in determining which products to use, and they work beautifully. I only wish lived nearer a store!

We were at the Edinburgh Festival in 1993; I came upon Napiers, and fell in love with the idea of using herbs for wellbeing and staying healthy. This shop has good memories for me.

Hi I suffer with nerve pain and I use Napiers cream daily. I find it very soothing and it has a beautiful aroma of it. When my daughter comes into the room she always asks what the beautiful smell is.

Had a wee storytelling session in February where all the stories were about herbs and their use in folklore. My story about nettles went down well, accompanied by some Napiers nettle tea for refreshment.

I'm just glad there's people like you around to keep herbal medicines available for us 'everyday' folk to use.

In 1954 I was a sickly 10-year-old boy suffering from asthma and recurring bronchitis. My Outpatient Sessions at the Western General Hospital were not helping. So when a friend of the family recommended a visit to Mr Napier my parents gladly acted on the suggestion. John Napier told me he would sort me out, and sure enough three months later after daily doses of a singularly unpleasant tasting herbal compound my asthma and general malaise left me, never to return (and I am now 81).

So I owe Mr Napier a huge debt of gratitude.

That's not all. When expecting our first child my wife was suffering grievously from morning sickness. Our GP had no answer but Mr Napier did. He prescribed a greenish clear liquid which worked a treat and my wife suffered no more morning sickness either in that or in later pregnancies.

My aunty told me her granny had sent her to Napiers as a child to go and collect medicine for her younger brother and sister in Victorian times.

Napier's has been instrumental in my Lyme disease recovery. They have pretty much all herbs of the Buhner protocol so you can find any herb you need for your specific symptoms and co-infections. The herbs are a reasonable price, which is very important when you are so sick and unable to work because of Lyme. From then on I have been using Napier's herbs for any ailments for the family as they have fantastic herbal antivirals and combination of them and antimicrobials. Specially now that it is so difficult to get a GP appointment, I have the peace of mind that Napier's herbs will do the job better and with less side effects.

I stumbled across Napiers and am so glad I did. In this day and age to find a company as ethical as Napiers, is rare. Excellent quality products, great customer service that make me return again and again. I love their innovative approach to herbs, such as the Vit D3/Vit K oral spray, so helpful for people like myself who have problems with tablets of any kind. Their authenticity shines through. Thank you Napiers.

I am an herbalist, doula and educator who visited from Florida in the US in February 2023. Everyone on my flight seemed to be coughing and I was determined that my family and I would not get sick. I looked your apothecary up on Google as soon as we landed and I was so pleased to find you! The shop is lovely and I could feel that it was steeped in tradition. Your staff is wonderfully knowledgeable. A trip to your store was a high point of my trip. The apothecary system in Europe is so much more respected. Thank you for being there for us!

I have relied on her knowledge and expertise a lot and never failed to find the mixes etc help me. I am so glad to be able to call on her when I need to. So Napier's has been a real blessing to my overall health and wellbeing thank you.

My mum began to have problems every winter with a persistent cough, and a neighbour suggested she should have a consultation at Napiers because our GP had run out of ideas! So, in the winter, I was often given extra bus fare money so I could get off at Napiers to collect her cough medication. Mum also had problems with varicose veins and found a Napier ointment that helped the itching. As I grew older I also started to use Napier products for my skin. My second child was allergic to many baby products. I still use Napier's products today.

When I was a young teenager I developed very bad acne. My mum brought me into Napiers for advice. We were given a jar of cream, which I think was called Poke Root, and a bottle of a blood tonic. It didn’t taste good at all, but I stuck with it and my acne was healed. And here I am 55 yrs later still using Napiers products.

My earliest memory of the shop goes back to my schooldays when I often would look in the shop window to see the world map displayed which showed the origin of some of the herbs used by Napiers. Jack Napier (my future father-in-law) also had in the window a display of foreign stamps from some of his overseas customers.

Having been welcomed into the Napier family Lynda & I would often spend time at weekends and during summer holidays going on our own or with Jack and Kathleen to collect herbs such as Eyebright, Yarrow , Meadowsweet and St John's Wort from the countryside surrounding Edinburgh. We once had an expedition to Harris and Kintail and came home with the car laden with herbs for drying

My family had never used medicines from Napiers so it was intriguing to discover (and use) some of the most popular remedies. These included Slippery Elm, Poke Root and of course the famous Lobelia Herb Syrup. We still have these at home. However with a young family growing up the Napier remedy that was most used was (and still is) Calendula, the tincture of the Marigold flower. It is unbeatable as a healing antiseptic for cuts, grazes, burns, bumps and stings. It certainly nips on an open wound but it certainly works.

His drawing of a train in my schoolboy's autograph book -the year 1954 is just visible in the bottom right corner.

On one of my visits I dared to ask for his autograph. In response he took my little book and on my next visit presented me with his magnificent drawing of a train. it was so kind of him and I was overwhelmed! I shall always treasure his memory.
