What is Hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism, sometimes called an “underactive thyroid”, happens when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone to meet the body’s needs. This can affect energy, mood, digestion, weight, menstrual cycles and long-term health in far-reaching ways.

In the majority of cases of primary hypothyroidism, the underlying cause is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, which is autoimmune. For some people this process is slow and subtle; for others it can be dramatic, confusing and life-changing.

Thyroid Health

What the webinar covered

In this session, Functional Herbalist Alyssa Dalos explained what may be happening in the body during hypothyroidism, and how a holistic, root-cause approach can sit alongside conventional care. The session was designed to be relevant whether you are newly diagnosed, have been on thyroid medication for years or simply suspect that “something is off” with your thyroid.

  • How it works: a clear tour of the hypothalamus–pituitary–thyroid (HPT) axis and how thyroid hormones are made, converted and used in the body.
  • How it breaks: what can go wrong in primary hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and why symptoms can be so wide-ranging and individual.
  • How support may help: the foundations of Alyssa’s clinical approach, including Western herbal medicine, functional medicine insights, nutrition and movement.
  • Real-life patterns: how fatigue, brain fog, weight changes, menstrual problems, digestive issues and autoimmune clusters may relate back to thyroid health.
  • Working with your team: how holistic thyroid care can complement GP or specialist treatment, rather than replace it.

The live session also included time for audience questions, allowing attendees to explore practical next steps.

Please note: the Q&A included in the recording is for general educational information only. We cannot diagnose, treat, prescribe, or provide personalised medical advice, and questions about an individual’s medical history, symptoms, medications, test results, or treatment plan should be discussed with your herbalist or medical professional.

Who this webinar is for

This session is intended for people living with, or strongly suspecting, hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s, as well as those wanting to understand thyroid health in the context of complex, long-standing symptoms.

  • You have a diagnosis of hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s or “borderline” / subclinical thyroid issues and still do not feel like yourself.
  • You experience fatigue, brain fog, low mood, weight changes, cold intolerance, period problems or digestive issues that have never fully resolved.

About Alyssa Dalos, Functional Herbalist

Alyssa is a Functional Herbalist, qualified in 2019, who supports women and LGBTQIA+ people living with complex, long-standing health concerns. With five years of clinical experience, she blends Western herbal medicine, functional medicine, nutrition and movement to offer thoughtful, sustained care that addresses root causes and builds lasting resilience.

She specialises in autoimmune conditions such as hypothyroidism and coeliac disease, female reproductive health including PCOS, endometriosis and PMDD, and chronic issues such as pain, IBS, constipation and reflux. She works particularly well with patients who feel unheard or stuck in cycles of symptoms that never quite resolve.

Alyssa’s approach is both evidence-informed and deeply holistic. She honours the lineage of traditional herbalism while engaging critically with modern healthcare, holding that good medicine is compassionate, contextual, and conscious of the wider systems we all live within. Her aim is to help patients uncover what “healthy” truly means for them — and to support the steady, practical habit changes required to get there.

What you will take away

By the end of the webinar, viewers gained a clearer map of how the thyroid works, how common patterns of hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s develop and why symptoms often extend far beyond “just the thyroid”.

  • A grounded understanding of the HPT axis and key thyroid lab markers (TSH, T4, T3) explained in plain language.
  • Insight into how immune, digestive, hormonal and nervous system health intersect with thyroid function.
  • An overview of how herbal medicine, nutrition, movement and lifestyle approaches may be integrated alongside standard medical care.

The session is educational rather than prescriptive: specific treatment recommendations can only be made in individual consultations, but the recording aims to help you better understand the landscape so that future choices feel more informed.
