Bovine or Marine Collagen: Which One Is Right for You?

A guide from Napiers, Scotland's oldest herbalist, to help you choose the collagen that suits your skin, hair, nails and joints.

Why people turn to collagen supplements

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body. It gives structure to skin, hair, nails, bones, joints and the connective tissue that holds everything in place. From around our mid twenties our natural collagen production begins to slow, and by our forties and fifties that decline becomes more noticeable. Skin can feel less springy, hair can feel finer, nails can split more easily and joints can feel stiffer.

For women in perimenopause and menopause, falling oestrogen adds another layer. Oestrogen plays a role in skin thickness, moisture and elasticity, and its decline is linked to visible changes in skin and hair during this life stage.1 That is one reason so many women in their forties and fifties start looking at collagen for the first time.

A growing body of clinical research suggests that oral collagen peptides can support skin hydration and elasticity, and may contribute to hair thickness, nail strength and joint comfort when taken consistently.2,3 Results tend to appear gradually, usually after eight to twelve weeks of daily use.

Bovine and marine collagen, side by side

Most collagen supplements on the UK market come from one of two sources: cows (bovine) or fish (marine). Both are effective when taken daily, but they have a slightly different make up.

Bovine collagen is rich in Type I and Type III collagen. Type I is the main collagen in skin, hair and nails. Type III is found alongside Type I in skin and in the gut wall. A systematic review of controlled trials found that oral collagen peptides, including bovine sources, improved skin hydration and elasticity compared with placebo.3 Bovine collagen has also been studied for joint comfort in active adults, with trials reporting reductions in joint discomfort after daily supplementation.4

Marine collagen is primarily Type I and is prized for its small peptide size, which some studies suggest supports absorption. A randomised controlled trial in women found that daily marine collagen peptides improved measures of skin elasticity and hydration over twelve weeks compared with placebo.5 Marine collagen is a good choice for anyone who avoids beef for cultural, dietary or personal reasons, provided they are comfortable with fish.

A quick note on taste. Taste is often the real differentiator, and it rarely makes it onto the label. Marine collagen can have a distinctly fishy note that lingers in hot drinks or smoothies, and the quality varies hugely between brands. It is worth knowing that "unflavoured" does not always mean tasteless. To cover the fishy flavour, many marine powders are loaded with sweeteners, natural flavourings or strong citrus notes, which can feel like a lot first thing in the morning. Bovine collagen, by contrast, is genuinely neutral. A good quality, pure bovine powder has no smell and no flavour, and blends cleanly into tea, coffee, porridge or water without changing the taste of what you are drinking. For anyone who plans to take collagen every day for the long term, that matters more than people expect.

In short, both work. The honest answer to "which is better" is usually "whichever one you will actually take every day, from a source you trust."

What to look for in a quality collagen

Not all collagen is equal. When you read a label, look for a clear source (grass fed bovine or wild caught marine), hydrolysed peptides so your body can absorb them easily, and no unnecessary fillers, sweeteners or flavourings. Certifications and sustainable sourcing standards also tell you something about how the product is made.

At Napiers, our Swiss Bovine Collagen is made from pure, grass fed bovine peptides. It is unflavoured, dissolves cleanly into tea, coffee, smoothies or porridge, and contains nothing you would not expect. It is the kind of quiet daily ritual that fits into a busy morning without fuss.

Speedwell and collagen: the inside and outside ritual

Collagen is a long game, and your skin responds best when you support it from both directions. Collagen peptides work from within, giving your body the amino acid building blocks it uses to repair and rebuild. Topical skincare works from the outside, keeping the skin barrier calm, hydrated and resilient so that new collagen has a healthy environment to settle into.

Napiers Ultimate Speedwell Set
The Ultimate Speedwell Set: a three step topical ritual built around Scottish Speedwell.

Speedwell (Veronica officinalis) is a small, quietly powerful herb that grows wild across Scotland. Herbalists have used it for generations to soothe sensitive, reactive skin and to calm the everyday redness and irritation that can make skin feel tight, fragile or tired. It is traditionally valued for its gentle, cleansing action and its ability to bring comfort to skin that feels stressed by the weather, by hormonal change, or by the demands of modern life.

Our Ultimate Speedwell Set is a three step ritual formulated by our in house herbalists around this hero ingredient. Used morning and evening, it cleanses gently, layers in hydration, and locks in moisture so that the skin barrier stays comfortable and supple. That matters because a calm, well hydrated barrier is the foundation on which collagen does its best work. When skin is dry, inflamed or stripped, fine lines look deeper and new collagen struggles to show.

Swiss Bovine Collagen feeds the skin from within. The Speedwell Set soothes and strengthens it from without. One supports the structure. The other protects the surface. Over eight to twelve weeks of consistent use, most people find that their skin simply feels better: calmer, springier and more like itself.

So, which one is right for you?

If you eat beef and want a versatile, affordable daily peptide, bovine collagen is an excellent starting point. If you prefer pescatarian options or want a Type I focused formula, marine collagen is a strong alternative. Either way, consistency matters more than the source. Aim for around ten grams a day, give it at least eight to twelve weeks, and pair it with a gentle, protective skincare routine such as Speedwell.

If you would like help choosing, our herbalists are always happy to talk you through the options. Collagen does not have to be complicated. It just has to be trusted.
