Its big claim to fame in skincare is its exceptionally high content of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) — an omega-6 fatty acid that the body uses to maintain healthy skin cell membranes. It's one of the richest plant sources of GLA available, higher even than evening primrose oil, which is better known.
GLA plays a direct role in the skin's ability to hold onto moisture. When skin is deficient in it, the cell walls weaken, moisture escapes more easily, and you get the tightness, flaking and irritation associated with dry or eczema-prone skin.
