The Herbs of Achilles and Hercules

Natural solutions for treating skin infections for MMA fighters, boxers and wrestlers.

Outside the ring, open wounds and close body contact are the main triggers for skin problems. Staphylococcus aureus is a communicable skin problem common among MMA fighters, while ringworm, herpes simplex and impetigo are also endemic.

Treat skin from inside as well as outside

Before antibiotics were invented people used herbs like echinacea. Now that many bacteria are antibiotic-resistant many people are resorting to herbs again.

Echinacea purpurea has become popular for boosting the immune system against colds but this has only been used since the 1930s, as it was easier to grow in Europe. Prior to that, Echinacea angustifolia was used by Native American Indians. The distinction does matter. Since the late 1800s, Echinacea angustifolia root extract has been used for a range of infected wound conditions, including acute bacterial infections, septicemia and even rattlesnake poisoning.

Napiers Elixir of Echinacea Complex is a high 1:1 strength herbal blend of Echinacea angustifolia root with two other skin herbs; wild indigo and fumitory. Napiers Elixir of Echinacea Complex is a traditional herbal medicinal product used to relieve: the symptoms of the common cold, flu type infections and minor skin conditions, based on traditional use only. Echinacea Complex can be taken 3 times a day for several weeks to support skin health.

Liquids are commonly used as they are utilised more quickly by the body. Around 90-95% of a liquid is absorbed in the stomach. Tablets on the other hand are absorbed in the intestine and commonly only 15%-18% is absorbed.

Ringworm, impetigo, bacterial and fungal infections

Plants defend themselves against bacterial and fungal infections by producing phytochemicals that are active against different fungi. For example, calendula (marigold), goldenseal, bayberry, Balm of Gilead, myrrh, bilberry leaf, grapefruit seed and tea tree. Herbalists use these to treat skin conditions such as like ringworm or impetigo.

Fungi and bacteria are always found even on healthy skin. These can aggravate the skin especially on off days if you have spots that become infected, or dry skin that you scratch and irritate the skin's surface. In our skin care range we use antifungal herbs to keep the skin's surface bacterial and fungal flora healthily balanced to support healthy skin.
