Whether you're involved in MMA fighting (mixed martial arts fighting) or another contact sport like wrestling, boxing or rugby, you'll face some specific health concerns. During a fight or match you can incur injuries; broken bones, cuts, muscle tears and sprains.

Outside the ring, open wounds and close body contact are the main triggers for skin problems. Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a communicable skin problem common among MMA fighters, while ringworm, herpes simplex and impetigo are also endemic. Herbs can often help where infections are resistant to antibiotics.

Sometimes, mental health problems take their toll as well. These include anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PSD), depression and substance abuse. Substance abuse doesn’t even have to be illegal drugs. A lot of prescribed drugs can be addictive or have unpleasant side effects affecting mood, your sex drive, and your stomach or even causing muscle pain. Some fighters prefer to avoid these and use herbal and plant medicines instead.

I've outlined some of the most common conditions that fighters have told us about or asked for advice on, and some practical steps for you to take to stay in control of your health.
